The latest federal budget, with 535-billion-dollars in spending, has been released on Parliament Hill.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says the government is pumping billions into housing and creating a national school food program. It has also set aside money for the first phase of a national pharmacare program.
To pay for it, the Liberals are raising capital gains taxes on the wealthiest — a move that will bring in an additional $19.4 billion over four years; something Freeland says will help millions of Canadians.
The government is projecting that 3.87-million new homes will be built in Canada by 2031.
Peterborough Kawartha MP Michelle Ferreri voiced strong criticism of the budget, expressing disappointment and frustration with what she perceives as a continuation of ineffective policies.
One of Ferreri’s main points of contention was the perceived inadequacy of certain budgetary initiatives, such as the $10-a-day childcare program, which she argued fails to address the needs of many families.
Despite her criticisms, Ferreri expressed hope for positive change, emphasizing the importance of practical and common-sense solutions.
Ferreri is urging Canadians to carefully consider their options and hold elected officials accountable for their actions.
