Statement from MP Michelle Ferreri – Trudeau Liberals’ $62-Billion Deficit Marks Chaos, Weakness, and Failure for Canadian Families
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 17, 2024
Peterborough, ON – Michelle Ferreri, Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha and Conservative Shadow Minister for Families, Children, and Social Development, released the following statement in response to the Liberals’ 2024 Fall Economic Statement, the shocking $62-billion deficit, and the resignation of Chrystia Freeland as Finance Minister:
“Justin Trudeau and his Liberals are spending your money faster than you can make it, and Canadian families are paying the price. This $62-billion deficit isn’t just a number—it’s proof of reckless spending, broken promises, and the continued mismanagement of this government. After nine years of failed policies, Canadians simply can’t afford any more of Trudeau’s failures.”
The $62-billion deficit is the largest in Canadian history, a direct result of out-of-control spending, borrowing, and the mismanagement of Trudeau’s policies. Debt-servicing costs are climbing to $48 billion annually—money that could have been invested in healthcare, education, or supporting families, but is instead going to pay the banks. Chrystia Freeland’s resignation as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister is the clearest sign yet that even she has lost confidence in Trudeau’s policies and leadership.
“Freeland’s departure highlights a complete lack of confidence in this government and its ability to control spending or put forward a meaningful plan. Canadians deserve better,” said Ferreri.
Families across Peterborough-Kawartha and Canada are suffering under the weight of this government’s failures. Groceries are out of reach. Rent and mortgages are crushing. Seniors can’t afford heating bills, and young Canadians are giving up on owning a home. This Fall Economic Statement offers no real solutions to these issues.
Trudeau promises to build 4 million homes, yet After nine years of photo op announcements, red tape and excuses, housing prices are skyrocketing, and homes remain unaffordable. Handouts like rebates and one-time payments Inflationary temporary tax tricks will not come close to making up for the quadrupling carbon tax on heat, housing, food and fuel are a band-aid solution at best as families struggle with out-of-control costs. Crime has doubled under Trudeau’s watch, and over 47,000 Canadians have died of overdoses due to a lack of action on the drug crisis and wacko policies that have flooded our streets with taxpayer funded dangerous opioids.
“This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about real families making tough decisions every day—choosing between heating their homes, putting food on the table, or paying the rent,” Ferreri stated.
The resignation of Chrystia Freeland and Sean Fraser, Housing Minister, sends a strong signal about the dysfunction within the Liberal government. These key departures—combined with a lack of solutions in yesterday’s Fall Economic Statement—reveal that Trudeau’s government has lost its ability to address Canada’s most pressing challenges.
“Freeland and Fraser stepping down shows this government is fractured, lost, and unable to move Canada forward,” Ferreri said.
Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives have a clear, common-sense plan to get Canada back on track:
- Cut Trudeau’s inflationary spending to reduce costs for families and businesses.
- Axe the carbon tax to lower heating and grocery bills and ease the cost-of-living crisis.
- Build affordable homes faster by cutting red tape and ensuring projects are completed quickly.
- Address crime and overdoses by supporting law enforcement and providing resources to combat the crisis at its roots.
“We can’t let Trudeau and his advisors continue to put families last while they tax and spend their way through crisis after crisis. It’s time to bring accountability, stability, and real solutions to the forefront,” said Ferreri.
“This government has failed Canadians time and time again,” Ferreri concluded. “It’s time to bring home powerful paycheques, affordable homes, and a government that works for you, not against you. Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives are ready to lead with a real plan—one that puts families first and rebuilds trust in government.”
The choice is clear: it’s time to turn the page, put an end to Trudeau’s mismanagement, and restore hope and opportunity for all Canadians.
